The Empress card in tarot is all about feminine energy, nurturing and the divine mother. My version of this card represents an experience I had years ago, before I was diagnosed with autism. I was having a meltdown on the tube in London because it was too busy. I wasn't lashing out, but I was gripping my mother and crying uncontrollably. My memory of the event is blurred, but I remember a woman making eye contact with me. Instead of annoyance or frustration, there was a kindness in her eyes. In a single look she told me - 'I'm sorry this is happening to you'. The tube is a place where most people are grumpy, irritable and generally intolerant. But she showed me a look of kindness in that moment, when I was feeling overwhelmed and humiliated.
